When I decided to be a vendor at a poultry swap for the first time I knew I had to put together a couple things for the booth. Most importantly was figuring out the cages for the chickens. Next on my list of importance was creating signage that easily stated what we were selling as customers walked by. I came up with an upcycled project
Carving Our Own Stamps
With letterboxing in our future, I wanted the kids to create their own stamps.
Making Letterbox Journals
We’ve gone geocaching many times & decided it was time to try letterboxing. The first thing we each needed for our letterboxing adventures were journals. Of course, there’s always the option of buying a journal. But I like the cost of making our own much better, so that’s what we did.
Wampum Belt Weaving
Another Native American craft the kids made were wampum belts. There are fabulous instructions at There’s a Dragon in my Art Room. We didn’t stray too far, if at all, from her directions.
Our Chicken Huts
A couple years ago we got turkeys & Farmer John built them a shelter, which we referred to as the Turkey Hut. We no longer have turkeys, but the hut worked well for chickens. So well that Farmer John built a second hut just for the chickens.
Making Egg Geodes
I have always wanted to make egg geodes with the kids. We finally did it! It’s a fairly simple science project & can be done in a day or two. Most of that time is waiting for the crystals to form. We remade our mix 2 extra times, so it took us about a week to complete. With the exception of the alum, the supplies
How to Make Cement Leaves
A few years ago I made a cement leaf & since then have been wanting to do it again. I finally did it. I love this craft for a couple reasons. First is just because it’s something different than my typical paper & sewing crafts. Also because it doesn’t have to be perfect. The imperfections make it fun & arty.
Abstract Quail Egg Painting
Today the kids argued with each other far more than I could take. So, I came up with a project that entertained them at least for a little bit. Farmer John had been saving some of our quail eggs with the hopes of incubating them. I know some of them, though, had been layed more than 10 days ago. We don’t put eggs in our
Recycled Feed Sack Turned Tote Bag
If you have livestock, you have lots of feed bags. We use the empty bags in various ways, but when I saw a tote made from one, I knew I had to try to make one. The first one was easy enough to make, but took me a bit to figure out everything – especially the boxed corners. The corners were really easy to make
Our Chicken Tractors
A number of years ago Farmer John told me about chicken tractors. I thought he was crazy. Cuckoo. It did not go with my vision of a cutesy coop surrounded by flowering perennials and a picket fence. I also couldn’t imagine why you would want to move your chickens throughout the yard. Let’s be realistic, my cutesy coop was not practical. The majority of our
