A couple weeks ago I took Farm Kid2 to the Audubon Society to listen to a lecture on Peregrine Falcons & to meet a woman who wrote the book Falcons in the City. It’s a great book about the Peregrine Falcons in Portland. Not too long ago, there were no known nesting Peregrine Falcons in Oregon. Thanks to a handful of workers/volunteers, they’ve made a
Birds of 2013: Week 37
Just a couple days after I visited the wetlands alone, I came back with my kids. This time I had the time to explore a little more. I’m so glad my kids enjoy bird watching, too. It’s a fun thing for us to do together. For the first time in many weeks, I’m able to add more birds to my year-long list.
Birds of 2013: Week 36
I finally made it back to the wetlands. I didn’t have a lot of time to explore, but it was nice to go. I was surprised to see how far the water level dropped over the summer. There were many Great Egrets & Great Blue Herons in the water that day. There were also a number of shore birds, which are new species for the
Birds of 2013: Week 35
Since yesterday was International Vulture Awareness Day, this week’s post will be about some of the vultures I’ve seen in the last year. Except on one special trip, the only vultures I see are turkey vultures.
Birds of 2013: Week 34
Another group of bird shots from around our house. This time I’m focusing on birds collecting their own food.
Birds of 2013: Week 33
Another week without new birds to report. But that’s ok, it gives me a chance to showcase the birds I see in my everyday life around my home. A few years ago we added a small pond to our landscape. I’m so glad we did. It’s pretty & the birds love it. Here are the birds hanging around the pond this summer:
Birds of 2013: Week 32
Last week’s bird post was showcasing a nest of barn swallow babies. We also have a number of other juvenile birds hanging around.
Birds of 2013: Week 31
Every year barn swallows make nests in the eaves of our house or in Farmer John’s Man Shack. This year they built one of their nests in a perfect place for baby observing. They built it above our front porch. We are able to see the birds every time we walk outside & while inside through a window. No new birds this week, but it’s
Birds of 2013: Week 30
I have 18 different birds to go until reaching my goal of 100 for the year. There are 24 weeks left & I’m getting nervous that I’ll really be scrambling the last few weeks to make my goal. This summer has been busy, but not in a way that’s helping my bird numbers. Although my bird species numbers aren’t growing, I have been seeing lots
Birds of 2013: Week 29
The other day I took the kids to a park that we had never been to. We explored the park for about an hour, mostly walking around the pond. The walk was nice. My boys especially enjoyed it. But, I only saw a handful of birds & don’t get to add new ones to my list. 🙁 We did see many dragonflies & damselflies, though.
