Betty is light buckskin similar to her sire, Tam. Her dam, Georgia, is primarily black with roaning.

Milo is also buckskin.

Betty had one buck. He was the only buckskin this year.

WILLOW

Willow is 12 years old and doing amazing, but IMHO too old to be bred. It wasn’t planned, but she was bred. The birth did not go well and we had to call the vet for the first time during a kidding.

My daughter noticed Willow was in labor, but that it didn’t look right. Sure enough, she had birthed the placenta first. As time went by, Willow occasionally tried pushing but nothing was happening. She has always birthed 3 or 4 kids with no problems, so this was very concerning. I gloved up and felt around and noticed one kid not in its sac. I tried helping Willow all I could, but eventually I realized I couldn’t help in the way she needed and she couldn’t push this baby out herself. My daughter called the after hours vet and as we waited the hour for her to arrive I just sat with Willow and tried to make her feel comfortable. It was horrible. She was asking me for help and I just couldn’t help her.

When the vet arrived, she inserted a huge syringe of lube and got to work. She said Willow’s uterus was low and deep and the baby was in there further than typical. According to the vet, because Willow usually has 4 kids her uterus was stretched out. This time, because there was only 1 kid there just wasn’t enough happening to tell her body what it needed to do and she wasn’t dilated all the way. It’s likely the placenta was delivered first because it was what fit and could move through the canal. The vet pulled pretty damn hard and got the baby out. It was still alive. I was shocked. I was prepping myself mentally for our first newborn that didn’t make it. My daughter and I tended to the baby, while the vet helped Willow.

Both Willow and the baby came through the ordeal and are healthy. For me, though, it was a lesson in sticking to my gut. I knew she shouldn’t have been bred and I should have triple made sure that didn’t happen.

Georgia is black with random spotting, roaning, and frosting

Ronald is solid gold with random spotting, a white poll, and frosting.

Back in 2021, Georgia developed gangrenous mastitis directly after kidding. Her odds were not in her favor for surviving. Thankfully, she did survive. One of her mammary glands, though, does not produce milk. I had decided she wasn’t going to be bred going forward. However, my daughter wanted to breed her and had agreed to bottle feed the kids if necessary.

We didn’t breed any goats in 2022, but in 2023 Georgia birthed two handsome bucks and had no trouble keeping them fed.

Georgia has had 12 kids. Eight boys & four girls. Betty is her one doe we have retained.

Note for 2021: Typically, I do a yearly recap of kidding season. It helps remind me later of a few things specific to that year. It’s my journal. However, I didn’t write a recap in 2021 at all. Then, we didn’t breed in 2022. So, this quickie version was created quite a long time after the 2021 kidding season and is only noting the dams and how many kids they birthed.

WyldeStyle was born with the first litter of kids on our farm. She continues to be naughty and I adore her.

WyldeStyle’s dam is Willow, who is a solid cream color with random spotting and roaning. Crash is WyldeStyle’s sire. He has a light buckskin/swiss marked combination pattern.

WyldeStyle is beautiful with a Swiss marked pattern.

Tam has a buckskin pattern. His sire is light buckskin, while his dam is a medium buckskin.

WyldeStyle birthed quads this year! 2 does and 2 bucks. All are light buckskin.

This is the 3rd time WyldeStyle has been bred with Tam. The result has been a total of 9 kids – 5 does and 4 bucklings. Every single one has been adorable with a light buckskin pattern.
