Another Native American craft the kids made were wampum belts. There are fabulous instructions at There’s a Dragon in my Art Room. We didn’t stray too far, if at all, from her directions.
Native American Parfleche Bag Craft
Parfleche were bags used by Native Americans living in the Plains to carry dried meat &/or personal belongings, such as clothes. The kids each made a parfleche bag out of a grocery sack.
Three Kings Day
To go along with our study of Mexico, we spent January 6th learning about Three Kings Day. It is 12 days after Christmas & celebrates the three wise men bringing their gifts to baby Jesus. We don’t typically celebrate this day in our family, but many Latin Americans do so we explored it.
Mixed Media Bird Collage
I’m sure I’ve mentioned that I love That Artist Woman. She has fabulous crafts that are made in such a way that young kids can make them & look amazing. When I saw her Steller’s Jay portrait I knew it was something we would try. Well, we did try them & they are one of my favorite things the kids have made.
Making Egg Geodes
I have always wanted to make egg geodes with the kids. We finally did it! It’s a fairly simple science project & can be done in a day or two. Most of that time is waiting for the crystals to form. We remade our mix 2 extra times, so it took us about a week to complete. With the exception of the alum, the supplies
DIY Alice in Wonderland Costumes
Farm Kid2, Farm Girl & I dressed up in an Alice in Wonderland theme for our church’s harvest party. My hubby & Farm Kid1 were at a cub scout event that weekend so they weren’t part of our fun. I would have enjoyed them being there, but honestly it was nice to only have to make 3 costumes instead of 5. We didn’t decide on
Birds of 2013: Weeks 38 and 39
A couple weeks ago I took Farm Kid2 to the Audubon Society to listen to a lecture on Peregrine Falcons & to meet a woman who wrote the book Falcons in the City. It’s a great book about the Peregrine Falcons in Portland. Not too long ago, there were no known nesting Peregrine Falcons in Oregon. Thanks to a handful of workers/volunteers, they’ve made a
Abstract Quail Egg Painting
Today the kids argued with each other far more than I could take. So, I came up with a project that entertained them at least for a little bit. Farmer John had been saving some of our quail eggs with the hopes of incubating them. I know some of them, though, had been layed more than 10 days ago. We don’t put eggs in our
Birds of 2013: Week 19
This week’s bird post is different than normal because it doesn’t include a photo of an actual bird. Instead, I’m sharing the bird my 7 year old son made me for Mother’s Day. When he gave it to me he said, “I know you like bald eagles, so I made this one for you.” I love it & I love how thoughtful he was. It
Keeping Our Kids Busy on a 15 Day Road Trip
As I’ve mentioned many times, we went on a road trip in October. To read more about it you can click here. But, what I haven’t shown you yet is how we kept the kids entertained for 3500 miles. We don’t have DS’s or ipads or any other gaming device to take with us. When I first started planning this trip, I thought I would
